About the Artist

For as long as she can remember, Sonette has been covered in paint, chasing inspiration, and turning emotion into colour.

South African visual artist Sonette vd Merwe is the creative force behind Messy Masterpieces, a vibrant art experience built on one simple belief:
Art should be joyful, expressive, and for everyone.

Working across an ever changing mix of mediums including oil paint, acrylic, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, graphite, coloured pencil, alcohol markers, and even Jik & Ink, Sonette’s artistic style is intentionally diverse and emotionally driven. Her work shifts with mood, inspiration, colour palettes, music, films, books, memories, and life itself. No two collections feel the same because no two creative seasons are ever identical.

While oil paint remains closest to her heart, her love for bold experimentation and expressive texture constantly pulls her toward new techniques and unexpected combinations. From vibrant florals and dramatic city scenes to emotional portraits and atmospheric landscapes, every artwork tells part of a story.

Sonette’s creative career officially began in 2014 through hosting art workshops designed to make creativity feel approachable, exciting, and freeing. Since 2017, she has also taught fine art through Art Alive Art School, helping students of all ages discover their own artistic voice in a welcoming and encouraging environment. Her teaching style focuses less on perfection and more on exploration, confidence, and self expression.

Her work has found homes across South Africa and internationally, including Dubai, and is showcased annually at the Art Alive Exhibition every July.

Over the years, countless workshops, paint covered tables, happy accidents, late nights, and unforgettable creative moments slowly shaped the vision that would eventually become Messy Masterpieces.

What started as a passion for sharing art with others grew into something far bigger than expected, leading to the birth of Messy Masterpieces in May 2025 and its official launch in July 2025. Today, the brand continues spreading creativity, colour, laughter, and a little bit of chaos across multiple provinces in South Africa.

Through Messy Masterpieces, Sonette continues to create colourful, judgement free spaces where people can reconnect with creativity, laugh loudly, get paint on their hands, and experience the joy of making art without pressure.

Because art was never meant to be perfect.
It was meant to make you feel something
