People often ask me what my favourite painting is. The honest answer? It changes all the time. I’m the kind of person who has a new favourite song every week, so choosing a single painting as the one feels nearly impossible. The artist brain is a messy and emotional one.
But today, right now, if I had to choose… it would be this piece:
"My muse, my mentor, my mother."
This oil painting is based on a photo taken by one of her dearest friends at her residence. It captures her partially hidden behind a sweet little Chinese Crested pup, her eyes deep in thought, her energy calm and quiet.
It’s not exactly her in the traditional sense, my mom is loud, vibrant, and full of life. But in this moment, this portrait lets me look past her energizing aura and into her soul. It’s calm, it’s soft, mysterious. It’s her.
This piece is more than just a painting. It’s a dedication. A thank you. A visual love letter to the woman who sat beside me through school art projects, who celebrated every win no matter how small, who showed up every time, and who never stopped believing in my creativity.
She has always been in my corner. She has always been my muse. She is my mentor. She is my mother.
And today, this painting is my favourite.
With love
Sonette
